Born in Strasbourg, Fremiet studied under the tutelage of Jean-Baptiste Clesinger and Auguste Dumont at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Fremiet's artistic prowess was not limited to the human form. He was also known for his remarkable animal sculptures, which were celebrated for their lifelike accuracy and dynamic energy. Among his most famous works are "The Rhinoceros," which was commissioned by the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, and "The Hippopotamus," which was exhibited at the 1867 Universal Exposition in Paris.
