EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the legendary English poet and author, Geoffrey Chaucer, in his portrayal as the Franklin, or 'Squire of the King's Household,' in Richard Pynson's edition of The Canterbury Tales published circa 1532. Chaucer, born in 1343 in East Anglia, is considered a seminal figure in English literature and is often referred to as the 'Father of English poetry.' The image shows Chaucer, dressed in the attire of a Franklin, riding a horse with a pack on its back. The Franklin was a member of the royal household, responsible for the care and management of the king's horses and hounds. Chaucer held this position under King Richard II and later King Henry IV. Pynson's edition of The Canterbury Tales was one of the most popular and influential editions of Chaucer's works during the Tudor period. The book, published in London, features woodcut illustrations, including this depiction of Chaucer as the Franklin. The print provides a unique glimpse into the historical context of Chaucer's life and the role he played in the royal court. Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales is a collection of 24 stories, each told by a different character on a pilgrimage to Canterbury Cathedral. The tales reflect the diverse social fabric of medieval England and offer insight into the lives and customs of the time. The work is renowned for its vivid characters, wit, and realism, and has had a profound influence on English literature and culture. This print offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of Chaucer, the Franklin, and the historical context of his works. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of Chaucer and his contributions to English literature.
