EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, sourced from Mary Evans Picture Library, depicts the esteemed German composer and conductor, Carl Friedrich Zelter (1758-1832). Zelter was a pivotal figure in the musical world of his time, serving as a teacher to the prodigious Mendelssohn and nurturing his talents. He was also a cherished friend of the renowned poet and intellectual, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Born in Berlin, Zelter's musical prowess was evident from an early age. He studied under the tutelage of Johann Christian Friedrich Höldke and later became a member of the Berlin Sing-Akademie. In 1786, he was appointed as the Kapellmeister to the Royal Court Orchestra in Berlin, a position he held for over four decades. Zelter's friendship with Goethe began in 1794, when the poet visited Berlin. Their bond deepened over the years, with Goethe often seeking Zelter's musical advice and support. Their shared love for music led to numerous collaborations, including the composition of incidental music for Goethe's play "Faust." Among his many students, Zelter is best known for his influence on Mendelssohn. The younger composer studied under Zelter from 1827 to 1829, during which time he honed his skills in counterpoint and learned the intricacies of choral music. The influence of Zelter's teachings can be seen in Mendelssohn's later works, particularly his oratorios and choral symphonies. This evocative photograph print, captured in 1827, offers a glimpse into the life of a man who played a significant role in shaping the musical landscape of his time. Zelter's legacy as a teacher, conductor, and friend continues to resonate, making him an essential figure in the history of classical music.
