EDITORS COMMENTS
This caricature depicts James D. Stoyle, a prominent English character actor and comedian, in the role of Ben Barnacle from the production of "Billee Taylor" by Stephens and Solomon at the Imperial Theatre in London during the late Victorian era, around 1880. Dressed in a sailor uniform and donning an extravagant hat adorned with flowers, Stoyle's portrayal of Barnacle was met with much acclaim and controversy. The character of Ben Barnacle was known for his boisterous and comical antics, and Stoyle's rendition of the song "All on Account of Eliza" during an entracte became a sensation, drawing both admiration and derision from London audiences. The song, which told the tale of Barnacle's infatuation with a woman named Eliza, was whistled and jeered at throughout the city, adding to the notoriety of the production. Stoyle's expressive face, complete with bushy whiskers and a determined gaze, is captured perfectly in this caricature. His sword, held aloft and ready for action, adds to the theatricality of the image. The artist, Terry Parker, masterfully conveys the energy and charisma of Stoyle's performance, making this caricature a fascinating glimpse into the world of Victorian theatre and the captivating career of this English character actor.
