EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of relief and triumph for the 90th Infantry Division as they entered the besieged Belgian town of Bastogne on January 22, 1945. The Battle of the Bulge, a major offensive launched by Nazi Germany in the Ardennes Forest of Belgium during the winter of 1944-1945, had left Bastogne and its defenders under siege for several days. The 90th Infantry Division, part of the US Second Army, had moved into the town on January 21st and launched an attack to the northeast the following day. The image shows a group of weary but determined American soldiers, their faces etched with the grime and exhaustion of battle, as they make their way through the streets of Bastogne. Tanks and other military vehicles, emblazoned with the distinctive insignia of the 90th Infantry Division, can be seen in the background, their guns trained on the surrounding terrain as they provide support for the infantry. The town's buildings, some damaged and in ruins, stand as a testament to the fierce fighting that had taken place. The Battle of Bastogne is considered one of the turning points of the European Theater of World War II. The successful defense of the town by the 90th Infantry Division and other Allied forces prevented the Germans from advancing further and ultimately led to their defeat in the Ardennes. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the bravery and resilience of the soldiers who fought in this pivotal battle, and the importance of their victory in the larger context of the war.
