EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "Study Treaty Native Americans Sketchbook ca 1860" from Artokoloro's Liszt Collection. The sketchbook, created by American artist John Quincy Adams Ward, takes us back to a significant era in history when treaties were made with Native American tribes. Ward, a student of Henry Kirke Brown and an esteemed figure in American sculpture, beautifully captures the essence of this time through his graphite drawings on paper. Measuring at 2 13/16 x 4 3/8 inches (71 x 111 cm), these sketches transport us to Urbana, Ohio, where Ward was born in 1830 and later moved to New York. One of Ward's notable works is the monumental bronze statue titled "Indian Hunter" which was installed in Central Park in 1869. It comes as no surprise that during the late-1860s period depicted in this sketchbook, he pursued several Indian subjects for inspiration. As we delve into each drawing within this remarkable collection, we are transported back to a crucial moment when treaties between Native Americans and settlers shaped our nation's history. This print serves as a powerful reminder of the cultural exchange and complex relationships that existed during this time.
