EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing Girandola Castel Sant Angelo, an etching that has been beautifully hand-colored. The artwork, designed and hand-colored by Louis Jean Desprez, a talented French artist born in Auxerre in 1743 and passed away in Stockholm in 1804, depicts a stunning display of fireworks. The Girandola is a papacy-sponsored event held at the Papal fortress originally constructed as Emperor Hadrian's mausoleum. This grand spectacle takes place against the backdrop of Castel Sant Angelo, located in Rome and etched by Francesco Piranesi, an Italian artist born in Rome in 1758 and died there in 1810. Measuring approximately 27 3/4 x 19 1/8 inches (705 x 486 cm), this print captures the magnificence of the fireworks illuminating the night sky over Castel Sant Angelo. The vibrant colors used to hand-color this etching enhance its beauty further. As you gaze upon this remarkable artwork from Artokoloro's Liszt Collection, you can't help but be transported back to Paris during the year 1471 when it was created. The image evokes a sense of wonderment and awe as you imagine witnessing such a spectacular display firsthand. This print serves as a testament to both artistic skill and historical significance - capturing not only an extraordinary moment but also preserving it for generations to come.
