EDITORS COMMENTS
Totnes Castle: A Glimpse into Medieval Defence and Fortification This evocative reconstruction drawing by Alan Sorrell, titled "Totnes Castle," transports us back in time to the medieval era in Devon, England. The image depicts the castle as it may have appeared during the 14th century, a testament to the intricate and robust defensive structures that once protected this historic site. The castle, situated in the picturesque town of Totnes, is a fine example of a motte-and-bailey fortification. The central motte, or mound, is crowned by a rectangular keep, its tall, imposing walls pierced by narrow arrow slits. These defensive features would have provided archers with a clear view of the surrounding landscape, allowing them to repel potential attackers. The bailey, or outer enclosure, is encircled by a substantial curtain wall, punctuated by towers at regular intervals. These towers, or bastions, would have housed archers and soldiers, providing them with a vantage point from which to defend the castle's perimeter. The drawbridge, which spans the moat that surrounds the bailey, adds an additional layer of security. When raised, the bridge would have effectively cut off access to the castle, forcing attackers to engage in a costly and time-consuming siege. This graphic representation by Alan Sorrell, commissioned by Historic England, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. It invites us to imagine the daily life of the castle's inhabitants, as well as the intense and strategic battles that may have taken place on its grounds. The intricate details of the drawing serve as a reminder of the ingenuity and resourcefulness of medieval architects and builders, who crafted such impressive fortifications to protect their communities.
