EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph, taken on the 26th of November 1947 by Aerofilms Ltd, captures the impressive Wiggins, Teape and Co Paper Mill located at Withnell Fold in Lancashire, England. The mill, which was in operation during the late 1940s, is situated alongside the River Douglas and is surrounded by lush green fields and meandering waterways. The mill complex is visible in its entirety in this image, with several large buildings arranged in a rectangular formation. The main mill building, which appears to be the largest structure, is situated in the center of the site and is connected to other structures by a series of bridges and walkways. The mill pond, which is fed by the River Douglas, is also clearly visible, providing the necessary water for the paper-making process. The intricate network of canals and waterways that crisscross the site are a testament to the mill's industrial past. These waterways were used to transport raw materials to the mill and to transport finished paper products to various destinations. The mill's proximity to the river also allowed for easy access to waterpower, which was essential for powering the mill's machinery. Despite the passage of time, the Wiggins, Teape and Co Paper Mill at Withnell Fold remains an important part of Lancashire's industrial heritage. This photograph offers a unique perspective on the mill, revealing its size, complexity, and connection to the natural environment. It serves as a reminder of the region's rich industrial history and the important role that paper mills played in shaping the local economy and community.
