This engraving depicts Felix Faure, the French politician who served as President of France from 1895 until his untimely death in 1899. Faure is shown in profile, with a distinguished moustache and goatee that were popular among men of the time. He is dressed in the formal attire of a high-ranking political figure, wearing a tailored suit and a bow tie. Felix Faure, also known as "Petit Pierre" or "Petit Pierre Lamy," was born in Bordeaux, France, in 1841. He rose to prominence in French politics as a member of the Radical Republican Party and served as Prime Minister from 1892 to 1893. In 1895, he was elected President of the French Republic, succeeding Sadi Carnot. Faure's presidency was marked by a period of relative stability and economic growth, but he was criticized for his authoritarian tendencies and his close relationship with the military. Tragically, Faure's presidency was cut short when he died by assassination in February 1899. He was the first French president to be assassinated while in office. Despite his controversial tenure, this engraving captures the essence of a man who played a significant role in French politics during a pivotal period in the country's history.
