EDITORS COMMENTS
This 18th-century painting, titled "Inauguration de la statue de Louis XV sur la place du meme nom, par le corps de la Ville de Paris, le 20 juin 1763," is a masterpiece by the renowned French artist Joseph-Marie Vien the Elder. The scene depicts the inauguration of the statue of King Louis XV on the namesake square in Paris, which took place on June 20, 1763. The painting captures the grandeur and opulence of the Baroque era, with a large crowd gathered to witness the historic event. At the center of the composition, we see the statue of King Louis XV, affectionately known as "Louis le Bien-Aime" or "Louis the Beloved," being carried on a grand carriage pulled by horses. The king is surrounded by a group of aldermen and other dignitaries, all dressed in their finest apparel of the time. The children in the painting are also dressed in colorful clothing, adding a sense of joy and celebration to the scene. Edme Bouchardon, the sculptor of the statue, is depicted on horseback, leading the procession. The painting also features a duke and other governors, all dressed in their formal attire, observing the event from the sidelines. The horses and other animals in the painting are depicted with great detail and realism, adding to the overall sense of grandeur and majesty.
