Battle between Carnival and Lent, c.1600-c.1620. Creator: Jheronimus Bosch (manner of)

Battle between Carnival and Lent, c.1600-c.1620.
A little man playing the bagpipes who personifies the carnival is being carried on a table out of the kitchen on the left. His pitcher of drink has fallen over, to the glee of one of the people carrying him. In the kitchen itself, the activities around the fireplace allude to Shrove Tuesday, and the cleaning of fish to Lent. The round table on the right is being carried on a woman's head, and on it are just two fish in reference to the meagre Lenten diet. To the right of the woman is a colossal bagpipe containing a lute-player and several other figures. The foreground is largely filled with two dancing couples (monks and nuns), and their dance is the dance of fools, signifying stupidity

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, believed to be in the manner of Jheronimus Bosch, depicts the lively and chaotic Battle between Carnival and Lent from around 1600-1620. The scene unfolds with Carnival, represented by a merrily drunken man playing bagpipes, being carried out of the kitchen on the left. His pitcher of drink has spilled, adding to the jovial atmosphere. In the kitchen itself, the activities around the fireplace suggest Shrove Tuesday, with the cleaning and preparing of fish symbolizing the upcoming Lenten period. On the right, a round table, laden with only two fish, is being carried on a woman's head, signifying the meagre Lenten diet. Nearby, a colossal bagpipe contains a lute-player and several other figures, adding to the cacophony of sounds. The foreground is filled with two dancing couples, monks and nuns, engaging in the dance of fools, symbolizing the stupidity and excess that Carnival embodies before the solemnity of Lent sets in. The print is a rich depiction of the cultural and religious traditions of the time, with the contrast between the festivities of Carnival and the devotion of Lent serving as a reminder of the cyclical nature of life. The chaotic scene, filled with color and movement, invites the viewer to explore the intricacies of this fascinating moment in history.
