Bison, known as large even-toed ungulates in the genus Bison within the subfamily Bovinae, have a rich history that spans across continents and time. While two extant species exist today, this photograph reminds us of their ancient lineage with four recognized extinct species. The North American continent was home to three of these extinct species: Bison antiquus, B. latifrons, and B. occidentalis.
