EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite elements of a Louis XV cream-painted panelled room, dating back to the years between 1750 and 1940. Crafted from polychrome wood by the talented French School, this remarkable piece is part of a private collection. The panels themselves are adorned with intricate C-scrolls, acanthus leaves, ruffles, and trailing vine-carved surrounds. Above them, rectangular wainscotting panels with molding add an extra layer of elegance. Some panels feature apertures for various purposes such as fireplaces, overdoors, doorways, mirrors, and two painted panel overdoors attributed to a follower of Francois Boucher. Mirrors designed specifically for these apertures complete the harmonious composition. The focal point of this stunning room is undoubtedly the 19th-century grey-veined marble fire-surround embellished with Spanish brocatelle panels and rouge royal marble insets. A modern concrete lining has been added to ensure functionality while preserving its historical charm. The meticulous attention to detail is evident in every aspect of this space. To aid in organization or restoration efforts throughout history, yellow-painted numbers reading NORTH WALL and SOUTH EAST have been marked on some panels along with multiple black and blue chalk inscriptions. Additionally, blue-bordered paper labels inscribed in graphite with numerals provide further documentation. Captured beautifully by Bridgeman Images' lens through Christie's auction house archives; this photograph allows us to appreciate the timeless beauty and craftsmanship that defines this exceptional Louis XV cream-painted panelled room.
