EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the elusive Platypus in its natural habitat, swimming gracefully in a river in Yungaburra, Atherton Tablelands, Queensland, Australia. The adult Platypus is seen collecting food with its unique duck-like bill, showcasing the remarkable adaptation of this fascinating creature.
The Platypus, scientifically known as Ornithorhynchus anatinus, is the only species of its kind found exclusively in Australia. Its appearance with a bird-like snout and thick fur has puzzled scientists for years due to its combination of mammalian and reptilian characteristics. Despite laying eggs like a reptile, female Platypuses also possess mammary glands to nurse their young.
After mating, the female constructs a burrow above water level where she lays one to three eggs before incubating them between her tail and belly. Once hatched, she nurtures her offspring by warming and suckling them for the first few days. The Platypus spends up to 12 hours a day hunting underwater for worms, shrimps, insect larvae, and other small prey which it collects from the riverbed or snaps up while swimming.
This image by photographers Steffen & Alexandra Sailer beautifully showcases the enchanting behavior of this mysterious animal that captivates all who encounter it in the wild.
