AU-69-LAW
Alberts Lyrebird - in full courtship display
near Wilsons Peak, New South Wales/Queensland border
Menura alberti
Male Alberts lyrebirds display all winter (breeding season) on rudimentary display mounds consisting of a few trampled sticks or low vines on the montane rainforest floor. Several alternate sites are used but there is usually a favourite used first thing in the morning. The bird stamps, quivers its tail & sings (it is a passerine), with very rich loud song & mimicry of other bird species plus other sounds. This attracts females for mating & declares the territory. Unlike the Superb lyrebird of more southern forests, which has down-curved tail
feathers that lie flat across the birds back when raised, the alberts tail feathers are unswept. When they are raised forward over the birds body in display, the down-curving forms this curious lacy shroud, inside which the bird sings and dances

With its vibrant plumage and flamboyant dance moves, this male lyrebird knows how to steal the show! Set against the picturesque backdrop of Wilsons Peak on the New South Wales/Queensland border, this avian artist showcases his talents on a rudimentary display mound made of trampled sticks and low vines. Each morning, he chooses his favorite spot to stamp, quiver his tail, and unleash a symphony of sounds that would make any songbird envious. With an impressive repertoire of mimicry skills, our protagonist serenades potential mates with a rich chorus that includes imitations of other bird species and various enchanting melodies. His performance not only attracts females for mating but also serves as a declaration of territory. Unlike its southern counterpart, the Superb Lyrebird, Albert's Lyrebird boasts unswept tail feathers that create a fascinating lacy shroud when raised forward over its body during display. It is within this ethereal curtain that our feathered maestro sings and dances with unparalleled grace. This stunning image captured by Wayne Lawler reminds us why nature is truly remarkable.
