EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enigmatic figure of Abd-ul-Aziz, the Sultan of Turkey from 1861. In this colored lithograph, we see a man who started his reign as a liberal and progressive leader, eager to bring Western influences to his country. However, over time he transformed into an autocratic ruler. The image showcases Abd-ul-Aziz wearing a traditional tarboosh (fez) atop his head and sporting an impressive beard that exudes power and authority. Standing against a backdrop of the Turkish flag, adorned with various orders and medals symbolizing his status, it is evident that he held immense influence during his rule. Interestingly, this particular lithograph was published in 1871 when Abd-ul-Aziz embarked on a historic visit to Europe. This journey aimed at strengthening diplomatic ties but ultimately marked the beginning of his downfall. The Balkans region witnessed uprisings in Bosnia, Bulgaria, and Herzegovina during this period which eventually led to him being forced to abdicate. As we admire this historical artifact from Universal Images Group's Archive collection, we are reminded of the complex nature of leadership and its impact on nations. Despite starting with noble intentions for modernization and progressiveness within Turkey's borders, Abd-ul-Aziz's story serves as a cautionary tale about how power can corrupt even those initially driven by good intentions.
