Extinct dodo

Engraving of the extinct dodo. The dodo was a distant relative of the pigeon. Roughly the size of a swan, it was heavily-built, flightless, and clumsy. Two species were known with certainty: the common dodo Raphus cucullatus from Mauritius, which became extinct between 1665 and 1670, and the Rodriguez solitaire Pezophaps solitaria from the neighbouring island of Rodriguez, which died out around 1761. The dodos numbers quickly dwindled following the arrival of humans to these isolated habitats. All but defenceless, these birds were ill-equipped to cope with the new hunters and the competition from other introduced animal species

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an engraving of the extinct dodo, a fascinating creature that once roamed the earth. Believed to be a distant relative of the pigeon, this hefty bird was roughly the size of a swan but had a distinctively clumsy and flightless nature. The dodo's existence was limited to two known species: the common dodo Raphus cucullatus from Mauritius, which vanished between 1665 and 1670, and the Rodriguez solitaire Pezophaps solitaria from nearby Rodriguez Island, which met its demise around 1761. Tragically, as humans arrived in these isolated habitats, the dodo population rapidly declined. Defenseless against their new predators and unable to compete with other introduced animal species for resources, these birds faced an inevitable fate. This engraving serves as both a reminder of their unique presence on Earth and a testament to our responsibility in preserving fragile ecosystems. The intricate details captured in this artwork invite us into the world of ornithology and zoology while highlighting humanity's impact on wildlife. As we reflect upon this extinct species' plight through this stunning illustration by Science Photo Library, it is crucial that we learn from history's mistakes and strive towards better conservation efforts for all endangered creatures today.
