Children under a sunlamp, 1960 C016 / 2693
Phototherapy. Children sitting under a sun lamp. Such lamps have a very bright, broad spectrum output. At the longer wavelength end of the spectrum (red and infrared) this gives a sensation of warmth on the skin while the higher wavelengths (blue and ultraviolet) promote the production of Vitamin D. In many northern European countries such therapies used to be given during winter periods, ostensibly to make the children healthy. Photographed in Russia in 1960

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Children under a sunlamp, 1960" takes us back to the mid-20th century in Russia. The image showcases a medical treatment known as phototherapy, where children sit under a powerful sun lamp emitting broad-spectrum light. In this case, the lamp's output includes red and infrared wavelengths that provide warmth on the skin while promoting the production of Vitamin D through blue and ultraviolet wavelengths. During winter periods in northern European countries like Russia, such therapies were commonly administered to ensure children's health. This particular photograph captures a moment of this therapeutic session taking place in Moscow. A male doctor and female nurse oversee the procedure while several young boys and girls sit attentively beneath the sunlamp. The children wear protective eyewear - some sporting sunglasses or shades - shielding their eyes from intense UV rays emitted by the lamp. The monochrome composition adds an air of nostalgia to this scene from Soviet-era medicine. This thought-provoking image not only highlights medical practices of its time but also serves as a reminder of how scientific advancements have shaped healthcare over decades. It invites us to reflect on both past approaches to treating ailments and our present understanding of phototherapy's benefits for human well-being.
