EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures a piece of history from 1927, showcasing an advertisement for Navy Cut Medium Cigarettes by Players. The pull-out counter card features a delightful caricature of a rugby player standing proudly next to a pack of Medium cigarettes. The text boldly reads "W. W. WAKEFIELD // TWO GREAT // PLAYERS" suggesting the endorsement and admiration for this brand among sports enthusiasts. On the reverse side, we find an interesting stand that allows the lower part of the card to be pulled forward, revealing additional information about Mardons - Window Novelties, Embossed Showcards &C. , Varnishers, Gelatiners & Frame Makers in Bristol and London. This clever design not only served as an advertising tool but also showcased the craftsmanship and creativity behind these promotional materials. The photograph takes us back to a time when tobacco advertisements were prevalent and celebrated in society. It offers us a glimpse into Nottingham's past where rugby was cherished as much as smoking Navy Cut Medium Cigarettes. As we admire this image today, let us appreciate it for its historical significance rather than considering any commercial use. It serves as a reminder of how advertising has evolved over time while providing insight into popular culture during that era.
