EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the breathtaking beauty of the North Downs in Surrey, England. Taken between 1923 and 1947, this Southern Railway carriage print was carefully removed from London & South Western Railway Tri-Composite Carriage No 3598 during its restoration at the National Railway Museum. The artwork featured in this print was created by Donald Maxwell, a renowned artist who studied at the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art. Not only was he an official artist to the Admiralty during World War I, but he also had the privilege of accompanying the Prince of Wales on his tour of India. Maxwell's talent shines through as he masterfully captures the essence and tranquility of this picturesque landscape. Maxwell's artistic prowess extended beyond painting; he illustrated travel guides and books written by esteemed authors such as Kipling, Hardy, and Belloc. Additionally, his creative skills were sought after for designing posters and carriage prints for SR (Southern Railway). This particular image transports viewers into a world where rolling hills meet clear blue skies and lush green fields stretch out endlessly before them. The charm and serenity exuded by this North Downs countryside scene make it a timeless piece that truly encapsulates nature's splendor. Displayed proudly in the National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this print serves as a testament to both Donald Maxwell's artistic brilliance and Southern Railways' commitment to celebrating Britain's stunning landscapes through their carriage prints.
