Picture shows some vintage petrol pumps in the Teesside area of England

Picture shows some vintage petrol pumps in the Teesside area of England.
Roadside petrol pumps were first installed in Britain in 1913, though they did not enter into general use until 1921. In 1920, the Automobile Association opened the first roadside petrol station (solely for the purpose of supplying fuel as opposed to being a garage) at Aldermaston, Berkshire.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the Teesside area of England, showcasing a collection of vintage petrol pumps. These iconic roadside fixtures were first introduced to Britain in 1913, but it wasn't until 1921 that they became widely used. The Automobile Association played a significant role in this development by establishing the country's inaugural roadside petrol station solely dedicated to fuel supply at Aldermaston, Berkshire. The picture was captured on January 1st, 1974, during the vibrant era of the 1970s. It transports us to an age when cars like the Morris Minor ruled the roads and gallons of petrol were dispensed from these charming pumps. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, we can't help but appreciate how far transportation has come since then. These vintage pumps serve as a reminder of our reliance on fossil fuels for decades and highlight how technology and infrastructure have evolved over time. Memory Lane Prints presents this remarkable photograph without any commercial association or intention. Instead, it invites us to reflect on our collective journey through history and marvel at these relics that once fueled countless adventures across Teesside and beyond.
