EDITORS COMMENTS
The Victory Column, or Siegessaule, in Berlin, Germany, is a historic monument that stands as a testament to Prussia's military triumphs in the late 19th century. Designed by architect Heinrich Strack and sculptor Ernst Herter, the column was originally built in the 1860s to commemorate Prussia's victory in the Danish-Prussian War. However, by the time it was inaugurated in 1873, Prussia had also emerged victorious in the Austro-Prussian War (1866) and the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71). The column's most striking feature is the winged bronze sculpture of the allegorical figure, Victoria, at its top. Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory, is depicted with outstretched wings, symbolizing the triumph of the Prussian army. The statue is surrounded by four smaller figures representing the victories over Denmark, Austria, and France. The Victory Column is an important historical landmark in Berlin, reflecting the city's rich past and its role in European history. It stands as a reminder of the military power and political dominance of Prussia during the late 19th century. Despite the passage of time, the column remains a popular tourist attraction and a source of pride for the people of Berlin and Germany.
