Flora Sandes (22 January 1876 24 November 1956) was the only British woman officially to serve as a soldier in World War I. Initially a St. John Ambulance volunteer, she travelled to Serbia, where, in the confusion of war, she was formally enrolled in the Serbian army. She was subsequently promoted to the rank of Sergeant major, and, after the war, to Captain. The Serbians called her Our Jeanne d Arc and she is pictured herein full military costume. Date: 1917

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the indomitable spirit of Flora Sandes, the only British woman officially recognized as a soldier in the British Army during World War I. Born on January 22, 1876, Sandes initially served as a volunteer with the St. John Ambulance before traveling to Serbia in search of adventure and a way to contribute to the war effort. In the chaos of war, she was inadvertently enlisted in the Serbian army, eventually rising through the ranks to the esteemed position of Sergeant Major. Her exceptional bravery and leadership earned her the respect and admiration of her fellow soldiers, who affectionately referred to her as 'Our Joan of Arc.' Dressed in her full military costume, complete with a Serbian flag, Sandes exudes a sense of determination and pride in this image, taken in 1917. Her uniform includes a tunic, trousers, boots, and a sash adorned with various medals and decorations, signifying her military accomplishments. Seated with a cane for support, Sandes' posture remains strong and unwavering, a testament to her unyielding spirit. Flora Sandes' story is a remarkable chapter in the history of women in the military. Her courage and dedication to her country's cause paved the way for future generations of women to serve in the armed forces. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the extraordinary contributions made by women during times of war and the enduring power of the human spirit.
