EDITORS COMMENTS
RMS Oceanic: A White Star Line Legend and Maritime Pioneer This evocative photograph captures the majestic RMS Oceanic, a White Star Line legend and a pivotal figure in maritime history. Launched in 1899, the Oceanic was the first vessel built after Thomas Ismay's acquisition of the White Star Line, marking a new era for the esteemed shipping company. With an innovative design, the Oceanic was the largest vessel in the world until 1901, setting a new standard for ocean liners. Despite her grandeur, the Oceanic's story was not without its challenges. In 1914, she ran aground off Foula, Shetland, marking the beginning of her demise. Scrap metal salvage operations began above the waves in 1923, and the remains of her hull were finally removed in 1979. The RMS Oceanic's groundbreaking design and historical significance continue to captivate maritime enthusiasts and historians alike. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a bygone era, when the world's largest vessels graced the seas and redefined the possibilities of ocean travel.
