EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the vibrant Red Jungle Fowl (Gallus gallus) and the elegant Golden Pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus), two captivating species of poultry from the annals of natural history. The illustration is taken from the esteemed "Dictionnaire de Sciences Naturelles: Ornithologie" (Dictionary of Natural Sciences: Ornithology) by Frederic Cuvier, published in Paris between 1816 and 1830. The Red Jungle Fowl, the wild ancestor of the domestic chicken, is shown in its natural habitat with its distinctive red plumage, black and white striped tail, and wattles. The bird's alert posture and piercing gaze convey its wild, untamed spirit. In contrast, the Golden Pheasant, also known as the Chinese Pheasant, is depicted in its resplendent glory. The male bird's iridescent plumage, adorned with gold and green feathers, is a sight to behold. The female, shown in more subdued brown and gray tones, is equally intriguing in her camouflage. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was executed by Guyard, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. This exquisite work of art is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world, as well as the meticulous craftsmanship of the artists and scientists of the time. It is a valuable historical document, showcasing the intricate details of these magnificent birds and providing a glimpse into the past.
