EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Jean Gabriel Pretre's illustrations in Frederic Cuvier's Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Paris in 1816, showcases two intriguing mammalian species native to the American continents: the North American Raccoon (Procyon lotor) and the South American Coati (Nasua nasua). The meticulous attention to detail in this historical artwork is evident in the individual hairs and textures of their fur, as well as the lifelike depiction of their expressive faces and postures. The Raccoon, a common and iconic species, is easily recognizable by its distinctive black "mask" around its eyes, ringed tail, and dexterous paws. A member of the procyonid family, raccoons are omnivorous and adaptable creatures, thriving in various habitats from forests to urban areas. The South American Coati, on the other hand, is a slender, agile mammal with a long, bushy tail and a ringed tail tip. Coatis are related to raccoons but are found in Central and South America. They are omnivorous and arboreal, living in forests and savannas. This stunning engraving is a testament to the artistry and scientific accuracy of the time, providing a glimpse into the natural history of these fascinating creatures. The intricate stipple technique used in the engraving adds depth and texture to the image, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical natural history prints.
