Glass Place Mat : Weymoor Post Office and Hall's Newsagents Shop
Home Decor from Mary Evans Picture Library
Weymoor Post Office and Hall's Newsagents Shop
Weymoor Post Office and Hall's Newsagents Shop, Harborne, south-west Birmingham. Note the K3 telephone box/booth/kiosk (right) - the K3, introduced in 1929, again by Giles Gilbert Scott, was similar to the K2 but was constructed from reinforced concrete and intended for nationwide use. Cheaper than the K2, it was still significantly more costly than the K1 and so that remained the choice for low-revenue sites. Date: circa 1932

EDITORS COMMENTS
Weymoor Post Office and Hall's Newsagents Shop, Harborne, South-West Birmingham: A Glimpse into the Past Step back in time with this photograph of Weymoor Post Office and Hall's Newsagents Shop in Harborne, South-West Birmingham, circa 1932. The exterior of the building exudes a charming 1930s ambiance, with its red-brick facade adorned with ornate details. At the far right of the image, a K3 telephone box, designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, stands proudly. Introduced in 1929, the K3 was a reinforced concrete design intended for nationwide use, making it a common sight on British streets during this era. Cheaper than the K2 but more expensive than the K1, the K3 became the preferred choice for most sites. Through the large plate glass windows of the post office, one can catch a glimpse of the postmistress attending to her duties. The shop's interior is not visible in this photograph, but we can imagine the hustle and bustle of sorting mail and assisting customers. Next to the post office, Hall's Newsagents Shop beckons with its inviting display of stationery, newspapers, and magazines. The shopkeeper, likely Mr. Hall, stands near the entrance, ready to greet his customers. The shop's offerings include an array of sweets, ice creams, and tobacco, making it a one-stop shop for the community. The shop's exterior is adorned with a large mirror, allowing customers to check their reflections as they enter or exit. The pages of the newspapers displayed in the window reveal headlines from the day, offering a glimpse into the news of the time. This photograph captures the essence of a bygone era, inviting us to reminisce about the simplicity and charm of the 1930s.
