This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Lesser Honeyguide (Indicator minor) and Black-fronted Nunbird (Monasa nigrifrons)," is an exquisite example of natural history illustration from the 19th century. The illustration is taken from Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, published in Paris, France between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was created by the skilled painter of natural history, Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), who later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The engraving, expertly executed by Guyard under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, showcases two intriguing birds native to Africa. The Lesser Honeyguide, a small bird with a distinctive red bill and orange legs, is depicted perched on a branch, while the Black-fronted Nunbird, with its striking black and white plumage, is shown in flight above.
