EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print showcases a Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) plaque dedicated to Brigadier General Sir Frederick Charles Somerset and the 2nd and 5th Battalions of the Gloucestershire Regiment. The image was captured in 2016 at the CWGC cemetery in Cassel, near Ieper (Ypres) in Belgium. During the First World War, Brigadier General Sir Frederick Charles Somerset, a distinguished British Army officer, led the 2nd and 5th Battalions of the Gloucestershire Regiment with great valor. The 2nd Battalion saw action in various battles, including the Battle of Loos in 1915, while the 5th Battalion fought in the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Tragically, many soldiers from these battalions lost their lives during the war. The CWGC plaque serves as a lasting tribute to their sacrifices and honors their memory. The inscription on the plaque reads, "In Memory of the Officers and Men of the 2nd and 5th Battalions Gloucestershire Regiment who fell in the Great War 1914-1918." The CWGC is an international organization that maintains 2,500 war cemeteries and memorials in 153 countries, providing a final resting place for the fallen soldiers of the First and Second World Wars. The organization's mission is to ensure that the graves of the fallen are kept in perpetuity and that their sacrifices are never forgotten. This poignant print serves as a powerful reminder of the bravery and sacrifices made by the soldiers of the 2nd and 5th Battalions of the Gloucestershire Regiment during the First World War and the enduring commitment of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to honor their memory.
