EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the enigmatic charm of Eleanor Nellie Souray, Lady Torrington (1886-1931), a renowned stage actress and Gaiety girl who made headlines during the Edwardian era. Born into the world of entertainment, Nellie's allure and talent earned her a place among the popular performers of her time. Her life took an unexpected turn when she met George Master Byng, 9th Viscount Torrington, at the races in Ostend. Their whirlwind romance led to marriage, but the union soon soured, and they divorced. Nellie's subsequent ventures included running a stud farm and opening the Vortex club in Soho. However, her fortunes took a turn for the worse, and she found herself in deep debt. Desperate and distraught, Nellie took her own life on a cold December night in 1931 by leaving a gas ring on in her flat. This poignant photograph, taken in 1910, captures the essence of a woman whose life was filled with drama, intrigue, and ultimately, tragedy.
