This photograph captures Laura Herford (1831-1870), an English painter and the first female student at the prestigious Royal Academy (RA) in London. Born in 1831, Laura was the aunt of renowned watercolor artist Helen Allingham (RWS), who also studied at the RA. Laura's groundbreaking enrollment at the Academy in 1853 paved the way for future female artists, as women were only allowed to attend life drawing classes under the close supervision of a male model and a male tutor until 1862. Laura's artistic career spanned from 1861 to 1867, during which she exhibited a total of thirty-seven genre paintings and portraits, both in oil and watercolor, at the RA. Her works showcased her exceptional talent and versatility, earning her recognition and acclaim in the art world. In this photograph, taken circa 1865, Laura is depicted in her studio, surrounded by her art supplies and finished paintings. The serene atmosphere of her workspace reflects her dedication and passion for her craft. Laura's presence in this image serves as a powerful reminder of the trailblazing women who defied societal norms and made significant contributions to the world of art.
