EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, created by the renowned naturalist and artist Maria Sibylla Merian for her seminal work "Metamorphosis Insectorum" in 1705, showcases two intriguing arthropods: the Huntsman spider (Heteropoda venatoria) and the Pinktoe tarantula (Avicularia avicularia). The Huntsman spider, depicted here with its long, slender legs and brown, speckled body, is a member of the Heteropodidae family, also known as the Heteropodinae or Laminacraniidae. This arachnid, native to the Old World tropics, is commonly referred to as the Brown Huntsman or Laya. The Pinktoe tarantula, a member of the Aviculariinae subfamily, is identified by its distinctive pink or red toes and its elongated abdomen. This common pinktoe, also known as the Guyana pinktoe, is native to Central and South America. Merian's meticulous attention to detail and her groundbreaking work in documenting the life cycles of insects and arachnids, including these two fascinating creatures, continue to inspire and captivate audiences over three centuries later.
