EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable artwork of Jan Willem PIENEMAN, depicting General Miguel Ricardo de Alava y Esquivel. The sketch, created in 1821, is housed in APSLEY HOUSE, London. General Alava was a distinguished veteran of the Spanish contingent at the historic Battle of Trafalgar and played a significant role in the uprising against French occupation in 1808. In 1810, he was appointed as the Spanish liaison with the British forces stationed in Portugal and developed a close friendship with none other than the renowned Duke of Wellington. This connection proved invaluable when Alava joined Wellington's field staff as the Spanish Commissionary for the allies during one of history's most decisive battles – Waterloo. The portrait captures not only Alava's military prowess but also his diplomatic skills as he served as Spain's ambassador to The Hague in 1815. His appointment on Wellington's staff at Waterloo further solidified his importance within international affairs during this critical period. Jan Willem PIENEMAN masterfully brings out Alava's commanding presence through intricate details and skillful brushstrokes. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back to an era defined by conflict and camaraderie between nations. This exceptional piece from Historic England Photo Library serves as a testament to both Pieneman’s artistic talent and General Miguel Ricardo de Alava y Esquivel’s indomitable spirit on and off the battlefield.
