St. Joseph, c1445. Artist: Rogier Van der Weyden
St. Joseph, c1445. This fragment was sawn out of the same large altarpiece as the Mary Magdalene in the National Gallery, London. The aged Joseph stood behind the Magdalene; the lower part of his body can still be seen in the fragment. The exterior of the building in which the scene took place was richly ornamented with Gothic decoration, like a church. From the collection of the Fundacao Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon, Portugal

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork of Rogier Van der Weyden, featuring a fragment of his masterpiece "St. Joseph" from around 1445. Originally part of a large altarpiece that also included the renowned Mary Magdalene in the National Gallery, London, this particular section portrays an aged St. Joseph standing behind her. The scene takes place within an ornately decorated building reminiscent of Gothic architecture, resembling a grand church setting. The attention to detail is remarkable as every aspect, from the landscape outside to the vibrant colors and clothing worn by the figures, is meticulously painted with oil on wood. Despite being just a fragment, this print offers a glimpse into Van der Weyden's mastery in capturing religious subjects and evoking deep emotions through his art. St. Joseph's presence exudes wisdom and humility as he stands alongside Mary Magdalene. Now housed in the esteemed collection of Fundacao Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon, Portugal, this piece serves as a testament to both Dutch Renaissance artistry and religious devotion during the fifteenth century. As we admire this print today, we are transported back in time to appreciate not only its historical significance but also its enduring beauty that continues to inspire awe and reverence for centuries past.
