Panshanger House, Hertfordshire, the seat of Earl Cowper, 1862. Creator: Unknown

Panshanger House, Hertfordshire, the seat of Earl Cowper, 1862. Large numbers assembled at Panshanger Park, near Hertford, on Monday week, to witness a volunteer field-day and sham fight by the Hertfordshire and some of the principal Middlesex corps...Panshanger is a noble domain, well wooded and intersected in all directions with beautiful glades; while a stream which runs through the park, bordered on each side by rising ground, seemed expressly provided to test the tactical skill of the commanders and the steadiness of the men. This stream was the key of the mimic contest which took place, the idea being the defence of the south bank against an enemy in force marching from Hertford in the direction of the London road...The inspection terminated before six o'clock, and the gallant volunteers proceeded to avail themselves of the kind consideration of Earl Cowper, who had placed in various parts of the park sundry barrels, the contents of which were appreciated by the thirsty warriors who for three hours had been marching and manoeuvring under a hot sun, and inhaling volumes of sulphurous vapour'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Panshanger House, Hertfordshire: A Scene of Noble Tradition and Military Pride, 1862 This evocative photograph captures the grandeur of Panshanger House in Hertfordshire, the esteemed seat of the Earl of Cowper. The image, taken in 1862, reveals a picturesque landscape dotted with lush greenery, winding streams, and a sense of history that transcends time. The tranquility of the scene was momentarily disrupted on this particular day, as large crowds gathered at Panshanger Park to witness a volunteer field-day and sham fight. The Hertfordshire and some of the principal Middlesex corps had come together to test their tactical skills and the steadiness of their men in a mimic contest. The stream that meanders through the park played a pivotal role in the sham battle, serving as the key to the defensive strategy. The objective was to protect the southern bank against an enemy force marching from Hertford towards the London road. The sun beat down mercilessly on the volunteers as they maneuvered and marched, their determination unwavering despite the sultry conditions. As the inspection came to a close before six o'clock, the gallant volunteers were treated to a well-deserved respite. Earl Cowper, in his graciousness, had placed barrels of refreshments in various parts of the park to quench the thirst of the weary warriors. The volunteers, having spent three hours under the hot sun, eagerly availed themselves of this kind gesture, their spirits lifted by the camaraderie and the thrill of the day's events.
