EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic Elephant Fountain at the Place de la Bastille, dating back to around 1805-1810. Created by Jean Antoine Alavoine, this watercolor on paper artwork is housed in the Musee Carnavalet in Paris, France. The image showcases a view of the fountain from Boulevard Saint-Antoine, providing a glimpse into Napoleon Bonaparte's visionary plan that unfortunately never came to fruition. The ambitious design featured an enormous wooden and plaster model standing at an impressive height of 24 meters. The Elephant Fountain was intended to be a monumental statue that would have undoubtedly left spectators in awe. Its grandeur and intricate details reflect the egyptomania trend prevalent during that era. However, despite its initial magnificence, circumstances led to its sale and removal in 1847. Nevertheless, this photograph allows us to marvel at what could have been one of Paris' most iconic landmarks. As we gaze upon this historical piece of artistry through time, we are reminded not only of Napoleon's ambition but also of how even unrealized dreams can leave lasting impressions on our imagination.
