EDITORS COMMENTS
This diptych, created by the talented artist Hugo van der Goes in the late 15th century, tells a profound story of humanity's fall and redemption. The print showcases two separate panels that together form a powerful narrative. The first panel depicts "The Fall of Man" portraying Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Standing beneath an apple tree, they are tempted by the forbidden fruit offered to them by a cunning serpent. This pivotal moment symbolizes mankind's original sin and subsequent expulsion from paradise. In contrast, the second panel portrays "The Redemption" or "Lamentation of Christ". Here we witness Jesus Christ being mourned after his crucifixion. His body is depicted with great detail, adorned with a crown of thorns and pierced nails as symbols of his suffering for humanity's sins. Measuring 32.3x22 cm and 34.4x22.8 cm respectively, these panels are housed at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, Austria. They exemplify Netherlandish artistry at its finest. Through this diptych, van der Goes skillfully captures both human vulnerability and divine grace. It serves as a reminder that despite our flaws and transgressions, there is always hope for redemption through faith in Christ's sacrifice. This remarkable print allows us to appreciate every intricate detail of these masterpieces while contemplating their timeless message about temptation, sin, mourning, salvation, and ultimately finding solace in our spiritual journey.
