EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving showcases the esteemed Rev. James Guthrie, Minister of Stirling, in 1661. The English School artist skillfully captures the essence of this influential figure from Scottish history. Reverend Guthrie's stern yet dignified expression reflects his unwavering commitment to his faith and his congregation. The print, part of a private collection, is believed to have been created in the 19th century for an edition of "The Scots Worthies" by Blackie in 1879. This iconic illustration serves as a powerful reminder of Scotland's rich religious heritage during a time marked by political turmoil. Rev. James Guthrie played a significant role in defending Presbyterianism against attempts to impose Episcopalian rule on the Church of Scotland. His steadfast refusal to conform led him down a path that ultimately cost him his life. In 1661, he was executed for treason after being accused of plotting against King Charles II. As we gaze upon this historic image, we are transported back to an era when religious freedom hung precariously in the balance and individuals like Rev. James Guthrie fearlessly stood up for their beliefs despite grave consequences. Through this remarkable engraving by Bridgeman Images, we are reminded not only of Rev. Guthrie's sacrifice but also of the enduring power that faith and conviction can hold over generations long past and present alike
