EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Call for volunteers under General Order No. 4,27th December 1860" captures a significant moment in American history. This lithograph, created by the American School in the 19th century, measures 35.4x21.6 cm and is part of the Gilder Lehrman Collection in New York. This printed broadside represents the first call for troops to join the Confederacy during the Civil War era. Dated from "Headquarters" in Charleston, it was issued by Adjutant and Inspector General Dunovant to various commanders within South Carolina's militia units. The order instructs these commanders to organize volunteers into companies according to a specific section of an unknown act mentioned above it. It further states that each company should provide a complete list of its officers, non-commissioned officers, and privates to "this office". If there are not enough volunteers, a draft is ordered to ensure sufficient numbers for every Corps. This document holds historical significance as it was issued just one week after South Carolina passed legislation to secede from the Union. It sheds light on how military forces were mobilized during this critical period in American history. Preserved by eGilder Lehrman Institute of American History and made available through Bridgeman Images, this print offers viewers a glimpse into an important chapter of our nation's past.
