EDITORS COMMENTS
Great print of Bill Slater, a legendary footballer who graced the pitch for Wolverhampton Wanderers during the 1940s and 1960s. Slater is considered one of the greatest full-backs in the history of English football, known for his pace, skill, and tenacity. Born in Wolverhampton in 1927, Slater joined Wolves as a teenager and made his debut for the first team in 1946. He quickly established himself as a key player, helping the team to win the League Championship in the 1949-50 season. Slater's performances earned him a place in the England national team, and he went on to represent his country 30 times. During the 1950s and 1960s, Slater continued to be a consistent performer for Wolves, making over 500 appearances for the club. He was a key member of the team that reached the FA Cup final in 1960, losing to Tottenham Hotspur in a closely contested match. Slater retired from professional football in 1967, having spent his entire career with Wolves. This print captures Slater in action during the 1960s, with his distinctive bald head and focused expression. He is shown in his Wolves kit, with the famous gold and black stripes prominently displayed. The photo brings back memories of a bygone era in English football, when players like Bill Slater helped to create a rich and enduring legacy for Wolverhampton Wanderers. Barratts, the renowned photographers, captured this moment in time, preserving it for future generations to appreciate. The print is a testament to the skill and dedication of Bill Slater, and a reminder of the passion and excitement that football has always brought to fans in Wolverhampton and beyond.
