The 13th Battalion Home Guard at a rifle shoot at Liddington, c. 1942
The 13th Battalion Home Guard at a rifle shoot on the chalk ridge at Liddington, near Swindon. The Home Guard evolved to be a well-equipped trained army and would partake in numerous drills and training exercises such as the one illustrated here. Not only were they ready for invasion but they could also perform bomb disposal and man anti-aircraft artillery. This was a far cry from their comedic image portrayed by the popular television series, Dads Army

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from the STEAM Museum of the GWR, we are transported back to c. 1942, witnessing a significant moment in history - The 13th Battalion Home Guard at a rifle shoot on the chalk ridge at Liddington, near Swindon. This image beautifully captures the transformation of the Home Guard from a ragtag group of volunteers into a formidable and well-equipped army during World War II. As they stand proudly with their rifles, it is evident that these brave men were not only prepared for invasion but also trained in bomb disposal and anti-aircraft artillery. Contrary to their comedic portrayal in popular television series like Dad's Army, this photograph reveals their true dedication and commitment towards defending their homeland. Their serious expressions reflect an unwavering determination to protect their country against any threat. The picturesque backdrop of Liddington adds an element of serenity amidst the chaos of war. The rolling hills and vast open space serve as a reminder that even in times of conflict, nature continues its course. As we gaze upon this historical snapshot frozen in time, let us remember and honor these ordinary individuals who stepped up when duty called. They epitomize resilience and unity during one of humanity's darkest hours. This print serves as both a testament to the bravery displayed by these home guard soldiers and a poignant reminder that heroes can be found in unexpected places.
