Sun and Moon astrology, 16th century

Sun and Moon astrology. 16th-century artwork of astrologers observing the Sun (left) and the Moon (right) to cast horoscopes. Astrology, the belief that planetary motions influence human lives, motivated studies of the heavens that would later develop into astronomy. Astrology was found in many ancient civilisations, including Babylon, Greece, Egypt and Rome. Early astronomers, such as Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler, would also cast horoscopes for their clients. The scene depicted here dates from 1543

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 16th-century artwork titled "Sun and Moon astrology" transports us back in time to witness the ancient practice of astrologers studying celestial bodies to cast horoscopes. The scene depicts two figures, one observing the radiant Sun on the left, while the other focuses on the enigmatic Moon on the right. Clad in ornate robes, these astrologers embody a deep connection between humanity and the cosmos. Astrology, prevalent across various civilizations including Babylon, Greece, Egypt, and Rome, believed that planetary movements influenced human destinies. This belief motivated scholars to study heavenly bodies extensively—a pursuit that would eventually evolve into modern astronomy. Even renowned astronomers like Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler dabbled in casting horoscopes for their clients. The monochrome illustration from 1543 by Detlev van Ravenswaay captures an era when astrology held great significance in society's fabric. It serves as a testament to our ancestors' fascination with understanding their place within the vastness of space. As we gaze upon this historic print today, it reminds us of how our understanding of science has evolved over centuries while acknowledging astrology's enduring cultural impact. Beyond its artistic beauty lies a profound story about humanity's eternal quest for knowledge and meaning amidst the stars above.
