EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library captures a significant moment in the history of space exploration. Titled "Space dogs" it showcases two adorable canines, Damka and Kozyavka, who were selected for an extraordinary mission. These furry pioneers were chosen by Soviet researchers to be sent into space aboard the Korabl Sputnik on 22 December 1960. In this snapshot taken in 1959, a diligent Soviet researcher is seen checking on Damka and Kozyavka inside their compact space capsule. The researcher's focused expression reflects the immense responsibility entrusted upon them to ensure the safety and well-being of these brave animals during their groundbreaking journey. Unfortunately, fate had other plans as the upper rocket stage failed, forcing the mission to be abandoned. However, thanks to meticulous planning and quick thinking by the Soviet team, both dogs were safely recovered after an unplanned sub-orbital flight. This image serves as a powerful reminder of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and exploration beyond our earthly boundaries. It symbolizes not only the triumphs but also the setbacks encountered along this daring path towards manned spaceflight. The Space Dogs program stands as a testament to mankind's unwavering determination to push boundaries and conquer new frontiers.
