Glass Frame : Pagets disease
Mounted Prints from Science Photo Library
Pagets disease
Pagets disease. Coloured X-ray showing a skull in Pagets disease or osteitis deformans. The skull has a mottled appearance due to its increased porosity, and part of it has become thickened (yellow). Pagets disease is a chronic bone disease which occurs in middle-aged and elderly people. The normal organisation and balance of bone absorption and creation becomes disrupted leading to weak deformed bones. Alterations in the shape of the skull can lead to damage to the inner ear, causing headaches, vertigo and deafness. Treatment, while not usually needed, is with painkillers, the hormone calcitonin to promote healthy bone formation or surgery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the visual representation of Paget's disease, also known as osteitis deformans. The coloured X-ray reveals a skull with a distinct mottled appearance, resulting from its heightened porosity. Notably, a section of the skull has thickened and appears yellow in coloration. Paget's disease is a chronic bone disorder that primarily affects individuals in their middle-aged and elderly years. This condition disrupts the normal balance between bone absorption and creation, leading to weakened and deformed bones over time. In this particular case, alterations in the shape of the skull can have detrimental effects on the inner ear, causing symptoms such as headaches, vertigo, and even deafness. While treatment for Paget's disease is not typically required for all patients, painkillers may be prescribed to alleviate discomfort. Additionally, hormone calcitonin may be administered to promote healthy bone formation or surgery could be considered if necessary. Science Photo Library offers this remarkable image as an educational tool within the medical field. It serves as a reminder of both the complexity of our skeletal system and how diseases like Paget's can profoundly impact our overall health and well-being.
