Glass Frame : Illustration of a pollen grain
Mounted Prints from Science Photo Library
Illustration of a pollen grain
Illustration of a pollen grain. Pollen are the minute male spores produced by seed plants, and serve a reproductive role. Containing the male gametes, a pollen grain consists of an outer wall (exine) which may be highly sculpted, as here. This sculpting may assist in wind, water or insect dispersal of the pollen, and is used by botanists to recognise the species of plant from which the pollen comes. Pores in the pollen wall help in water regulation and germination. The pollen is dispersed to female reproductive parts of the plant (pollination) where it grows (germinates) to fertilize the female egg. Magnification: unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an intricate illustration of a pollen grain, shedding light on the remarkable reproductive process of seed plants. Pollen grains, minute male spores, play a crucial role in plant reproduction as they contain the male gametes necessary for fertilization. The outer wall of this particular pollen grain, known as exine, is beautifully sculpted, showcasing nature's artistic touch. The exquisite sculpting serves more than just aesthetic purposes; it aids in the dispersal of pollen through various means such as wind, water or insects. Botanists utilize these unique patterns to identify the species from which the pollen originates. Additionally, pores present in the pollen wall assist in regulating water and facilitating germination. Once dispersed to female reproductive parts (pollination), this tiny marvel grows and germinates to fertilize the female egg – a pivotal step towards plant reproduction. Unfortunately, information regarding magnification remains unknown but does not diminish our appreciation for this stunning artwork. With its focus on nature's wonders and botanical intricacies, this print from Science Photo Library provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of pollination and emphasizes how even at microscopic levels, life thrives with purpose and beauty.
