Hippocrates, Greek doctor and philosopher
Hippocrates (c. 460-370 BC), engraving of a marble bust of the Greek doctor and philosopher. He is considered to be the father of medicine, although little is actually known about him. His influence survives in the Hippocratic oath, a code of medical ethics some medical students take on completion of their training. He founded a medical school on the Aegean island of Cos, where he advocated a rational approach, believing that disease was caused by physical phenomena and not by the interference of the gods. Hippocrates also discovered the properties of willow bark, from which aspirin is derived

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an engraving of a marble bust depicting Hippocrates, the renowned Greek doctor and philosopher. Believed to have lived between 460-370 BC, he is widely regarded as the father of medicine, leaving an indelible mark on the field that endures to this day. The image beautifully captures his stoic countenance, reflecting both wisdom and determination. Hippocrates' influence can be seen in the enduring legacy of the Hippocratic oath – a code of medical ethics taken by many aspiring doctors upon completing their training. His commitment to rationality led him to establish a medical school on the idyllic Aegean island of Cos. Here, he advocated for a scientific approach to understanding disease, rejecting notions that attributed illnesses solely to divine intervention. Notably, Hippocrates made groundbreaking discoveries during his time. One such discovery was uncovering the medicinal properties hidden within willow bark – ultimately leading to the development of aspirin. This revelation revolutionized pain relief and further solidified his status as an extraordinary physician and discoverer. While much about Hippocrates remains shrouded in mystery due to limited historical records, this remarkable engraving immortalizes his significant contributions in medicine and philosophy. As we gaze upon this monochrome artwork from centuries ago, we are reminded of how one man's pursuit of knowledge forever altered our understanding of health and healing practices.
