Whirligig beetles are small, shiny black insects that skim round and round on the surface of still or slow-moving water. Each compound eye is divided into two parts (grey rounded). EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a whirligig beetle's head, captured through a scanning electron microscope. The small, shiny black insect is known for its mesmerizing circular movements on the surface of calm or slow-moving water. The compound eye of this beetle is divided into two distinct parts - the upper portion allows it to observe its surroundings above the water's surface, while the lower part enables it to see beneath the water. Positioned between these remarkable eyes are short antennae that aid in sensory perception. At the center of attention lies the beetle's robust mouthparts, perfectly adapted for biting and capturing prey. Additionally, two sensory palps resembling drumsticks descend from near its mouth, enhancing its ability to navigate and detect potential food sources. The image provides an up-close look at this fascinating creature with a magnification level of x24 at 6x6cm size or x50 at 4.5x4.5 inch size. It offers valuable insights into nature's ingenious designs and serves as a testament to the wonders found within our wildlife.
