Glass Frame : Gulf Stream from space
Mounted Prints from Science Photo Library
Gulf Stream from space
Water flow in the Gulf Stream, seen from space. This view, looking roughly south-west, shows the boundary between water in the Gulf Stream and the coastal waters off the eastern USA. Sunglint highlights the difference between the water - the warmer, fast flowing Gulf Stream (lower half) shows complex eddies whereas the coastal waters are calmer. The Gulf Stream is a warm water current which flows northward along the eastern USA, then across the Atlantic just north of the British Isles, having a large impact on UK climate. This photograph was taken by the crew of Shuttle Endeavour during Mission STS-47 of 12-20 September 1992

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the mesmerizing beauty of the Gulf Stream from space, providing a unique perspective on the water flow in this powerful current. Taken during Mission STS-47 by the crew of Shuttle Endeavour in September 1992, it showcases the boundary between the warm and fast-flowing Gulf Stream and the coastal waters off the eastern USA. The image reveals a stark contrast between these two bodies of water. The lower half displays intricate eddies and swirls, characteristic of the dynamic nature of the Gulf Stream. Sunlight reflecting off its surface creates a captivating sunglint effect that further emphasizes its warmer temperature and rapid movement. In contrast, the coastal waters appear calmer and more serene, lacking in complexity compared to their neighboring counterpart. This visual distinction highlights how significant an impact this warm water current has on both regional and global climates. The Gulf Stream originates along the eastern coast of America before traversing across the Atlantic just north of Britain's Isles. Its influence on UK weather patterns is profound, making it a vital component for understanding climate dynamics. This extraordinary photograph not only serves as a remarkable piece of earth imagery but also reminds us of our planet's interconnectedness through natural phenomena like ocean currents.
