Glass Frame : Grain weevil
Mounted Prints from Science Photo Library
Grain weevil
Grain weevil. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of the thorax and head of a grain weevil (Sitophilus granarius). This beetle infests and damages stored grain, using the mandibles at the end of its elongated snout, or rostrum, to cut through the shell of a wheat grain and gain access to the food within. Females lay their eggs inside wheat grains, in order that their larvae can have a food supply. It can be controlled using fumigants. Magnification: x42 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a grain weevil, captured through a coloured scanning electron microscope. The image focuses on the thorax and head of this small beetle, known as Sitophilus granarius in scientific terms. A notorious pest, it infests and damages stored grains by utilizing its elongated snout to cut through the shell of wheat grains and access their nourishing contents. Females of this species lay their eggs inside wheat grains, ensuring a steady food supply for their larvae. However, these destructive insects can be controlled using fumigants to protect valuable crops from spoilage. The magnified view reveals the astonishing complexity of this tiny creature's anatomy - from its mandibles at the end of its rostrum to its vibrant coloration. This close-up allows us to appreciate both the beauty and menace that lie within nature's smallest creations. This photograph not only serves as an invaluable resource for zoologists studying invertebrates but also highlights the importance of understanding such pests' biology in order to safeguard our precious grain supplies. It is yet another testament to Science Photo Library's commitment to capturing remarkable images that bridge artistry with scientific exploration without any commercial intent.
